BMM Profile: Lisa Jefferson

I started my music industry career in music at A&M Records Publicity in 1989, after growing up in Detroit and graduating from Michigan State University. My Detroit family were some of the Motown pioneers including The Four Tops, Smokey Robinson and Claudette Robinson who are my Godparents. I always had a love for entertainment and headed out to Los Angeles with hopes to establish a career in what I thought at the time, would be in film. I guess it was natural for me to go into music coming from such a musical town.

Working at A&M in Publicity in the famous Charlie Chaplin Studios on La Brea in Hollywood was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. There I formed amazing and long-lasting friendships and worked with artists like Janet Jackson, Sting, Herb Alpert, Mint Condition, Barry White, Teddy Pendergrass, and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.

In 1992, I headed over to Elektra Entertainment and worked in Publicity & Artist Development. Soon after Sylvia Rhone came on board as our chairwoman, I was promoted to VP. I was blessed to work with so many incredible artists including Anita Baker, Gerald Levert, Missy Elliot, Busta Rhymes, Natalie Cole, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, MC Lyte, Keith Sweat, En Vogue and Tracy Chapman, among so many others.

Those were special and memorable days, but time moves on. After 10 years working at an Accountancy Corporation servicing entertainment industry talent, I have been able to segue into a career as a Business Manager, starting my own company, LRJ Account Management in 2017. Now I get to work with talent on the back end of their careers, helping them to manage their day to day personal and business finances, bookkeeping, insurance and investment needs. I find it quite fulfilling and oddly similar to my music industry career. I care deeply about each client that I have.

The depth of Nina Simone’s “Feeling Good” “Strange Fruit” and “Ne Me Quitte Pas” really move me.
