BMM Profile: Carole Carper

As the daughter of Tuskegee Airman, George Carper, I was always encouraged to spread my wings and soar. I was born in St. Louis, MO and introduced to the world of broadcasting at Fisk University in Nashville.

I was always outgoing and was voted 1st t runner up to Miss Freshman and 1st runner up to Miss Sophomore. While continuing my studies, I was recruited to work at College Radio station WRFN (Radio Free Nashville) by Bobby Bass of WCHB/WJZZ Detroit.

These humble beginnings spawned a 15- year broadcast career from 1974-1988 that included WESL, East St. Louis, IL, KADI-AM-FM and KMJM, St. Louis, MO, KKTT/KGFJ, KUTE-FM, KDAY, Los Angeles, CA.

I authored the popular “West Coast Scene” for Black Radio Exclusive from 1977-1981 while contributing articles for The Gavin Report and Radio Only.

Unbeknownst at the time, glass ceilings were being shattered. By accepting the position at KADI AM-FM, I became the 1st black female News Director in St. Louis’ history in 1976. History repeated itself as I became LA’s 1st black female News Director by accepting the appointment at KUTE-FM. In 1985, I became a board member of the Radio

Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) once again becoming the 1st female of color to earn the position.

Broadcast legend Jerry Boulding recruited me in 1988 to help launch industry trade, The Urban Network. I served in various capacities at Urban including Vice President/Managing Editor and scored 21 years as Manager of the Business office for the highly touted “Power-Jam” Conferences.

Currently, I oversee the Carper Casket Company in St. Louis, which was started by my grandfather in 1932. This 87 year- old Heritage business services funeral homes in the Bi-State area. www.carpercasket.com

What has made my journey so unique are the many talented people whose paths crossed with mine; Simply amazing.
