BBM Profile: Greg “English” Jones

I started in the music business over 34 years ago as a personal photographer for UTFO, Real Roxanne, Whistle, Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam, and Full Force in Brooklyn N.Y.C.  My career in promotions began promoting parties in the NY Dance scene coined Wild Pitch NYC Parties, that boasted a collective of DJs from Bobby Konders to Timmy Regisford. This further stoked my passion for music and I was encouraged to get a job in the industry. I called Virgin Records to speak to Kathi Moore and was mistakenly transferred to Cathy Jacobson.  After a short conversation, I was hired as National Dance Promotion Manager and later A&R Assistant at Cardiac Records, Cathy’s Dance imprint distributed by Virgin Records.

After stints working for other Indie Dance labels and a Dance Distribution company, I landed a position working for EMI Music Group as National Sales Manager, where I worked alongside Glynice Coleman and Lindsey Williams for artists Arrested Development, The OJays, and Guru from Gangstarr on the Jazzmattazz Project. Later Chris Pringle urged Kevin Evans to hire me as Northeast/Mid Atlantic Urban Radio Promotion Manager for Scotti Bros Records/BMG, working with Sweet Sable for the Above the Rim Soundtrack and Skee Lo’s Top 40 hit single “I Wish”. While at BMG I helped name, create and launch their website Peeps Republic/www.peeps.com. Later I was hired by Lisa Cortes as National Promotion Manager for her Loose Cannon Records/Polygram imprint label, working on Reggae artist Buju Banton, R&B group Skin Deep  and other new artists.

I transitioned to working for an energy company and helped to launch a converged work-from- home call center program for over 10 yrs.  I am happy to be part of a program that is great for the Clean Air Force Program and helps to take cars off the highway, which is beneficial to the environment. All the while marching to my motto song…Patti Labelle’s ”Music is My Life… I Gotta Keep on Dancing”!!!

Chris Lighty’s death was the catalyst for the Music Industry Family Reunion Facebook group. It’s a place for Industry Folk to come back together, have conversations/dialogue, reminisce and know what is going on with each other.
