I was17 when I got an internship through the Urban League of Kansas City, Missouri. It was a lab class at Tennessee State University when I had my next chance to get “on the mic” and into radio. My first paying radio gig was at1 03 KDF, a Rock & Roll station in Nashville, TN.  I then moved to Urban station, WQQK, followed by WDJY in Washington, DC and then WQOK in Raleigh, NC. Years later, the companies would add WFXC-WFXK and a gospel station.

Radio allowed me to meet some of the coolest, most interesting, talented people. I still think the music reps in the Carolinas were among the best!  Radio took me to around the world.  Marva Williams and I did our morning show from the Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, we took winners to Jamaica and The Bahamas.  I’ve had the honor of working with and coaching wonderfully talented people. Lots of them are still in the business. It was my pleasure and good fortune to have great people take interest in me, coach and teach me. I am eternally grateful to Fred Harvey, JC Floyd and John Broomfield. When they were managing me, I could not see what God had planned for me in the future including my current position as General Manager of AM 750 WAUG and WAUG TV. Now, I have the opportunity to help students learn about and hopefully get started in broadcasting.

My interest in ministry led to formal ministerial training in 1998. I preached my initial sermon in 2000 at St. Paul AME church in Raleigh, NC. Since then, I have gone on to receive my undergraduate degree at St. Augustine’s University and I’m headed to get my Masters of Divinity in the near future. I am thankful for the wonderful friends made in radio and the music industry. Many of us we have kept in touch over the years. I am not pastoring a church now, but that could change soon. I am excited about the future.
