Black Music Month Remembers George Threatt

“Big George” Threatt Jr. got his name honestly. He did everything in a “Big” way.

For 38 years, Threatt, who was born in Bibb County, GA, made his rounds in the radio industry, starting in 1978 when he was hired by Georgia Radio Hall of Fame inductee Hamp Swain to work at radio station WIBB in Macon, GA.

By 1980, Threatt, who graduated from Central Georgia Technical College, was the program director for WIBB, WXFM, and WXKO. In 1995, he joined WVKX as operations manager while also handling afternoon drive duties from 3-7 p.m. Monday through Saturday.  For two years in the 1990s, Threatt was the chapter president of the Southeast Chapter of the YBPC (Young Black Programmers Coalition), later renamed the National Young Black Programmers Coalition (NBPC).

An award-winning radio industry veteran who received 40 awards from various organizations throughout his tenure, Threatt earned the Program Director of the Year Award from Billboard Magazine and received the Music Director of the Year Award from Radio & Records. He was also the recipient of more than 50 Gold Albums from various performing artists.  “Big George” Threatt died November 23, 2019, at the age of 66.  Legends are defined by their work and how it impacts the culture.  We remember “Big George” Threatt so others don’t forget.
