BHM 2020 – DJ Rob G The General

I began DJing parties at 15 when I discovered I lacked the musical talent to start a band. My first radio shift was at WHOV-FM my freshman year at Hampton University.  By my sophomore year I was named music director & was on the late night show “Mystic Vibes”.  Before joining the US Navy, I attended Prairie View A&M & had a weekly shift on KPVU-FM.  I got my first break in the summer of 1999 on the Box in Houston as a car salesman at Bill Heard Chevrolet when the Madd Hatta would let me talk about the deals on new Chevys during his remote call-ins. I quit selling cars & decided to DJ full time, getting hired on weekends, then lunch mixes & gained the coveted spot of DJing for the Madd Hatta Morning Show. It was there that I created specialty mixes & in 2005 was named Radio One Mixer of the Year.  I hosted my own morning show “The Boom Juice Crew” on KROI-FM Boom 92.  Now I’m heard M-F on 97.9 The Box inside “The Best Damn Lunch Mix Period”.  On Saturdays I’m on Majic 102.1 from 9a-2p. I also spin on the Club Majic and “Jam Session” Saturday & Sunday evenings.

I had several influencers, from the Electrifying Mojo on WJLB in Detroit to Tom Joyner and DJ Ushy on K104 Dallas.  But Don “DJ Snake” Brown of the group nemesis is bar none the person who has influenced my career more than others.  He hosted “The All Hearty Def Party” on KNON.  One afternoon I asked if he would listen to a mix I put together.  It was a train wreck and he could tell I had no idea how to actually DJ. For the next 30 minutes Snake taught me how to count the BPM of songs & how to blend two records together.  It changed my life & I am forever grateful to him.

Without a doubt my proudest moment was June 11, 2016 when I got to interview Run DMC before they performed at the Boom Bash & then 90 minutes later I was on stage DJing for Rakim because his DJ didn’t show.  It was the greatest Hip Hop day of my life and I don’t believe it will ever be topped.  Growing up in Dallas & being a transplant in Houston I always felt like an outsider.  But on that day I felt like I was recognized as one of Houston’s best.
