BHM 2020 – Wendy Williams

I am the General Manager of Jazz 91.9 WCLK-FM, a professional public radio station licensed to Clark Atlanta University (CAU) in Atlanta. During my 25-year tenure the station has gone from terrestrial broadcast and streaming and serves a worldwide audience through several digital platforms, including the Jazz 91.9 app.

I have also served as adjunct professor for students majoring in radio broadcasting at CAU. Prior to WCLK, I served as General Manager of WEAA-FM, a Jazz station in Baltimore, WPXI-TV, the NBC affiliate in Pittsburgh and at a country music radio, WELA-FM, East Liverpool, Ohio.

My influence was Judith Fielder, TV Anchor KDKA, Pittsburgh, PA. I was 8 yrs old and fascinated by the fact that I lived next door to the in-laws of one of Pittsburgh’s most successful TV anchors of the time.  I would see Judith coming and going when she visited her family.  I loved the fact that she was an everyday black person just like me & she was very good at delivering the news.  She was exactly what you expect from your news anchor, smart, credible and beautiful and she was a sister, who actually wore an afro on TV back then.  It meant for me that this type of career was in my grasp.  From that point on, I wanted to be a TV news anchor and I spent my early career in TV news as a writer, producer. More opportunities opened up for me to work in radio & I was particularly interested in managing.  I knew I would become a decision maker helping to shape the content for programming and the community.

My most proud moment as a general manager is when we upgraded the station’s broadcast signal to double the reach of the station, attracting a larger audience. Another moment is back in 2000 when I applied for about six translator frequencies in Atlanta, and later leveraged use of them to improve operations at the station.
