BBM Profile: Komeka Freeman

My journey began as a student at Howard University. I developed a reputation as the “Determined Intern” while working for BET, Polygram Group Distribution and Sony Music.  Upon graduation, my formal career started at the Polygram Branch in Los Angeles. Our team (still family to this day) took pride in breaking new artists like Montel Jordan, Warren G, Brian McKnight and contributing to the careers of veterans such as LL Cool J, Diana Ross, The Isley Brothers and Lionel Richie. Serving the urban retail community was an amazing training ground and later opened doors to positions with Sony Music MJJ, Yab Yum, Priority Records, Rhino, and Warner Music Group. I transitioned from Music into Home Video, Theatrical Film, and Ad Sales Marketing for Discovery Channel/Animal Planet.

Early in my career I was fortunate to learn from an amazing leader, LeBaron Taylor. That brand of leadership, professionalism and nurturing spirit is rare in any business. Two key principles from LeBaron continue to guide my path.

A true leader is defined by their ability to open doors and cultivate growth in others

Speak multiple languages.  The business will change. Be able to adapt and thrive in any environment.

My greatest joy is being a proud mommy to my 3-year old son Kerry Bleu.

Now in my current role at AARP, I oversee high impact Corporate Partnership Programs for leading brands including: AT&T, Amazon, Ticketmaster/Live Nation; Regal Entertainment; and Cirque du Soleil to name a few.  I also enjoy mentoring Howard University students interested in entertainment.

It’s impossible to pick one inspirational song. I have always been inspired by artists who can deliver truly transformative live performances. Prince was in a class by himself.
