LaShawn \u2018Big Shiz\u2019 Daniels found huge success as a songwriter and producer for some of the music industry\u2019s A-list performers.\u00a0 With a genuine flair and innate sense for knowing what song best fit what artist, Daniels went all-in, writing some of the music industry\u2019s biggest hits.<\/p>\n
Daniels wrote for pop superstars Whitney Houston and Beyonc\u00e9 and shared a Grammy Award in 2000 for his work on the Destiny\u2019s Child anthem \u201cSay My Name.\u201d\u00a0 The list of artists Daniels wrote for sounds like a Who\u2019s Who of the industry. He\u2019s credited as a composer on songs by Michael Jackson (\u201cYou Rock My World\u201d), Lady Gaga (\u201cTelephone,\u201d which featured Beyonc\u00e9), Jennifer Lopez (\u201cIf You Had My Love\u201d), and Whitney Houston (\u201cIt\u2019s Not Right But It\u2019s Okay\u201d), among others.<\/p>\n
Daniels often worked with producer Rodney Jerkins, collaborating (along with other writers) on \u201cSay My Name\u201d for \u201cThe Writing\u2019s on the Wall,\u201d the sophomore album by the original R&B group Destiny\u2019s Child, featuring LeToya Luckett, LaTavia Roberson,\u00a0Kelly Rowland, and Beyonc\u00e9 Knowles.<\/p>\n
In an interview with the Recording Academy\u00a0to mark the 20th anniversary of the \u201cSay My Name\u201d release, Daniels said the idea for the song, which became the second single from \u201cThe Writing\u2019s on the Wall\u201d to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, came from his life experience. His girlfriend would call him while he was out, and if she heard anyone \u201cdoing anything in the background, she\u2019d be like, \u2018Who is that?\u2019 Then she\u2019d be like, \u2018Well, say my name then, and tell me that you love me.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
Success came early for Daniels who broke into songwriting when he was young. He received his first\u00a0Grammy nominations\u00a0(for record of the year and best R&B song)\u00a0in\u00a01998, for \u201cThe Boy Is Mine,\u201d a passionate and sentimental duet by Monica and Brandy.\u00a0Throughout his career, Daniels was nominated for seven other Grammys, including one for the Tamar Braxton hit, \u201cLove and War.\u201d<\/p>\n
LaShawn \u2018Big Shiz\u2019 Daniels died September 3, 2019.
