Coming from the #1 Urban station in the Bay (KSOL) I decided to get in the “biz” by calling record execs and asking for a meeting.\u00a0 I didn’t know what I could do (I didn’t really know the industry) but I knew I was creative and driven. Big props to Sharon Heyward for my first gig @ Virgin Records and taking a chance on a sistah!!<\/p>\n
After 16 years, I didn\u2019t like the biz (way before #METOO!) and decided to quit.\u00a0I had no plan (but to travel abroad) but fortunately, my Mama always told me “Keep some Kiss Ass Money or you’ll end up Kissing Ass!” so that’s what I did.\u00a0 Basically, if you have money saved (not just to pay your bills but also to enjoy life) you’ll always have options and won’t have to “kiss up” to anybody for a paycheck.\u00a0 I heeded her words of wisdom because I’ve never been a good ass kisser.<\/p>\n
That’s also why I could quit and create\u00a0BYOB (Be Your Own Brand!) <\/em><\/strong>to which I own the trademark. YESSSS!!<\/p>\n I figured if I could brand celebrities, I could brand everyone!\u00a0 I’ve always considered myself a brand based on WHO I was, not WHAT I did.\u00a0 I constantly remind myself, if I was creative, powerful, stylish etc in the entertainment business then I’m those things no matter what.\u00a0 Today I’m blessed to travel the world via BYOB<\/em><\/strong> and help people develop their personal brand at companies like Toyota, AARP, AT&T, Macy’s and others. What\u2019s crazy is I was behind the scenes in the industry and rarely took photos.\u00a0 Now I speak to crowds and take photos.
