Join us in congratulating DEREK HARPER, Operations Manager, Radio One Atlanta, our recognized “Hero Behind The Culture” for #BlackMusicMonth. A native of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Derek received Congressional nominations to attend The United States Naval Academy, West Point and the United States Air Force Academy. He attended the U.S. Air Force Academy Prep School for one year before deciding to pursue his interest in entertainment and accepting a Business scholarship to Florida A&M.
After graduating with a degree from Florida A&M’s prestigious School of Business and Industry, Derek joined WVEE / V-103 as producer of its #1 rated morning show in 1994. He left Atlanta briefly to accept the Operations Manager/Morning Drive Personality position with WFXM in Macon, Georgia before returning to Atlanta to join Radio One as Assistant Program Director/co-host/producer of the “Si-Man in the Morning” Show.
Derek’s career includes programming duties at WAMJ and Inspiration station WPZE. He helped to launch the syndicated “Coco Brother Live Show” and has won 6 Stellar Awards, while WPZE is the only station to win Station of the Year honors for three consecutive years. When he assumed his current Operations Manager role, he became responsible for a team that handles the day-to-day operations of Hot 107.9, Majic 107.5/97.5, Praise 102.5 and Classix 102.9.
Derek was recently inducted into The Black Radio Hall of Fame and finds time to help charity organizations such as St. Jude’s Children’s Research Center and the South Dekalb YMCA. His consulting firm, The Harper Influence, educates small business owners, entrepreneurs and budding entertainers on how to build their brand and offers media training.
