Join us in congratulating KASHON POWELL, Vice President of Programming, Radio One, our recognized “Hero Behind The Culture” for #BlackMusicMonth. Kashon is a dynamic media executive known for her strong leadership skills and strategic prowess who became the first woman to be named Vice President within the company in 2019.
A native of Marshall, Texas and now based in the Washington, DC area, Kashon embarked on her broadcast career journey during her sophomore year at the University of Houston, starting as a Research Assistant at KBXX-FM. She became the first female Program Director of the radio station in 2000. After working briefly as the Urban Editor for Radio & Records magazine, Kashon returned to radio at iHeartMedia in Philadelphia in programming positions at WUSL-FM and WDAS-FM.
Her programming excellence was recognized at iHeart and she assumed the role of Director of Urban Programming for their stations in Virginia before accepting the position of Program Director of Radio One’s legendary station, WMMJ-FM. Before long she was promoted to Operations Manager for all of Radio One’s Washington, DC stations before her responsibilities expanded again to include their stations in Philadelphia, Baltimore and Richmond, VA.
Kashon heads the programming for syndicated program “Love and R&B with Ralph Tresvant” and is the Creator and Executive Producer of Urban One Honors, an annual awards program that airs on TV One.
In various roles over the past three decades, Kashon has made impactful contributions and has garnered a reputation for excellence and innovation. She has also demonstrated a strong commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion in the media landscape, using her platform to uplift underrepresented voices and foster a more
inclusive industry.
