My name is Tone Spann, also known as Tony Soul and I’m a DJ and House Music Producer. My parents are Hank and Grace Spann. Both parents were record execs; Grace in the 70’s at ABC Records and Hank in the 80s & 90s at Motown & Warner Bros. and then at Billboard Monitor. Pops worked at radio for many years in NYC, ATL, Baton Rouge, NOLA.
I was born into the industry, moving all over the place with my parents. They brought me everywhere, to clubs, parties, work. It was New York City in the 70s!
I never even thought about doing anything else. It’s all I have ever known since birth.
My first job was as an intern with Louil Silas at MCA Records. I spent most of the time working with labels as the regional promotion rep around the country. Uptown, Mercury, Virgin, Blackground. Those were the hot labels. I spent 7 years in radio in New Orleans at WYLD and WQUE.
My ultimate goal is to continue to release new music, continue to tour. Continue to grow my new label, Maison Musique. Grow the House Music scene in NOLA. I’ve seen a lot of changes since my parents started out but the biggest is the devolution of the music. The future is positive, though, as the industry becomes much more niched since artists are able to go directly to the consumer and form a relationship/bond.
The song that inspires me is “Keep On” by D-Train. Follow me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @TonySoul.
