PTL Profile: Dylan Fleming

Yes I’m a music industry baby. Growing up with a radio programmer/record executive for a father, our garage was filled CDs. He often brought me to radio promotions & concerts during his time at KACE & V100.

In 2001, my father Kevin Fleming launched TheUrbanBuzz. It wasn’t until my sophomore year of college that I started writing for the Buzz. I would play him different underground music that I was into, so he encouraged me to start a column. I’d email him weekly telling him about a particular artist or album I was feeling. Pretty soon I started gaining a following.

In 2015, I launched PALM (PrettyAwesomeLitMusic), a brand shining a spotlight on great music I’d find online. Even as a college student I had vision, connections & a heart set on music.

This February I started at Benztown as Affiliate Relations Assistant. I’ve had internships and written for publications like HipHopDX & SLAP Media and worked for Salem Media group ,‘Stache Media and Open Road Films.

Ultimate goal: to manage PALM as a large media Entertainment company specializing in creating digital content focused on underground music. I want to coordinate partnerships with larger brands to curate festivals, tours and other events. Additionally I will be writing/directing digital content.

The biggest change I’ve noticed with my dad is the hustle and struggle of running your own business. Seeing first-hand what must be done as a music publication CEO inspired me. Recently my father was hired as the program director at 90.7 KPFK FM. After 10+ years away from radio he’s returned, and I couldn’t be more thrilled!  We’ve got great momentum going in the house with me starting my new job too.

The future of the music industry is bright with a lot of possibilities. However, this isn’t a get rich quick game. It requires passion. I want to learn the ins and outs of this business. To do so I must put my nose to the grindstone.

“Nights” by Frank Ocean. Almost every line in that song I can relate to what I was going through at the time it came out. “Nights” makes me think of chasing dreams while doing whatever it takes to pay bills.
