June 16 frame Celebrates Board Member Tony Gray

LLF Celebrate Board Members – Tony Gray

Tony Gray is one of the most influential radio programmers in the industry. His passion was fueled at an early age growing up in St. Louis, influenced by Hall of Fame Broadcasters Harry Caray and Don St. John. While in high school, he  interned at Rock station KSLQ and then headed to Normal, IL to study communications at Illinois State.

Tony got his first paying job at a small country station in Peoria, IL, though it would not be long before Dan Valle would offer him a job at WEZB (B97) in New Orleans holding down the 10pm-2am shift at the powerful CHR station.  Tony’s career would take him to markets like Baton Rouge, Detroit and Philadelphia, where he was a star radio personality on Power 99 under the name “Mike Jackson”.

After a few years at Power 99, Tony’s mentor Barry Mayo would offer him the job of a lifetime as Program Director of WRKS, Kiss 98.7 in New York City.  Kiss was NYC’s #1 radio station for nine books in a row. In 1990 Tony would leave WRKS to start his own consultancy company, Gray Communications Inc.  His client list includes many of today’s most successful Urban, Urban AC and Hip Hop Stations, providing them with the absolute best service and extensive research.

Tony is also a 2016 recipient of the Living Legends Foundation Jerry Boulding Radio Executive Award and we are proud to have him on our Board of Directors.
