Celebrating the Heroes of Black Music & Culture: Adriane Gaines

Today, the Living Legends Foundation is celebrating the Heroes of Black Music & Culture.

Join us in congratulating ADRIANE GAINES, veteran Media Industry executive, our recognized “Hero Behind The Culture” for #BlackMusicMonth.

Adriane’s career in radio began in 1973 when she joined the newly established NBN (National Black Network), the first coast to coast radio network in America wholly owned by African Americans. NBN provided 24/7 newscasts and public affairs programs to hundreds of Black formatted radio stations across the country. NBN became AURN, American Urban Radio Networks in the early ‘90s.

In 1978, Adriane co-founded and became Executive Director of the media industry’s acclaimed CEBA Awards (Communications Excellence to Black Audiences). From 1978- 1991, this annual event showcased a critical crossroads in culture and history by recognizing and awarding the advertising industry for their multi-cultural radio, print, television ads and programming initiatives directed towards the Black consumer. The collection is now at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture in NYC and is accessible on the Library of Congress portal. The CEBA statuette is permanently installed at the Smithsonian Anacostia Museum in Washington, DC!

Adriane has served as Interim General Manager of KATZ-AM and WZEN-FM in St. Louis, Vice President for AURN, was the first Black woman to serve as General Manager of WWRL 1600 in NYC, returned to AURN to launch their syndicated Inspirational Network as Vice President/General Manager and retired from AURN in 2022 as Senior VP of Programming. Her voice is still respected and appreciated as a consultant to the AURN CEO, Chesley Maddox Dorsey.

In the span of her extensive career, Adriane has mentored a wide array of talent and media professionals, opening the door so that the next generation could follow through.

Adriane, the Living Legends Foundation recognizes your hard work and love for the culture. We see you and now others will too!
