Today we celebrate board member Varnell Johnson, President of the Living Legends Foundation and head of Junes Entertainment. A Philadelphia native and Vietnam veteran, Varnell, affectionately known as VJ, started his music career at A&L Distributors. He moved on to Philly Groove Records as Head of Promotion before Oscar Fields tapped him to be East Coast Marketing/Promotion Director at GRC. John Smith then recruited him to join United Artists. He was building a reputation as a music executive whose vision and leadership produced results.
His career includes General Manager for Urban Music at EMI/United Artists, Vice President of A&R at Capitol, Vice President of Promotion & Marketing at Manhattan/Blue Note, Vice President Marketing & Promotion at Jive Records, launching Verity Records (now RCA Inspiration), Executive Vice President at Elektra and Senior VP/General Manager at Island. Through his company, Junes Entertainment, he continues to provide his expertise to industry artists and label executives.
