Black Music Month Remembers Roland Wirt

Few people have made as big an impact in Los Angeles as Roland Wirt. Known as the Godfather of LA nightlife, Wirt’s name was synonymous with having a good time.  His legendary parties attracted celebrities, high-profile personalities, as well as the general public, who all looked forward to his annual party of all parties, “An All White Affair With A Splash of Color Birthday Bash.”

Rolland Lavell Wirt was born in Memphis, TN in 1951. He didn’t like the original spelling of his name, so he changed it to Roland. He grew up in a historic area known as Orange Mound.  In 1965 he moved to Los Angeles where he attended Manual Arts High School and played “B” football with his twin brothers Daniel and Dennis. In 1967 he moved back to Memphis to complete the 11th grade. By 1968, Wirt, a gifted artist, had moved back to Los Angeles where he graduated from Crenshaw High School in 1969 and moved in with his brothers Carnell and Arnell to an area known as the “Jungle,” located at the foot of Baldwin Hills.

Before becoming L.A.’s iconic legend, Wirt worked at National Car Rental. He then moved to Detroit in 1973 to work with his younger brother, Ransom, at Ford Motor Company. While in the Motor City, Wirt worked as a disc jockey, playing music at wedding receptions and parties.  In 1976 Wirt returned to Los Angeles and worked at the Rapid Transit District (RTD) now known as the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. While working at RTD, he met many celebrities and established lasting relationships.

A skilled producer, Wirt had a deep interest in the music and entertainment industry.

Known for his impeccable attire, Wirt often included a classic chapeau, which earned him the title “Cat-N-Da-Hat.”

Wirt’s friends placed a billboard on the corner of 43rd and Crenshaw Boulevard in Los Angeles as a tribute. It reads Roland Wirt, June 20, 1951 – April 13, 2020, “Godfather of LA Nightlife & A Pillar In The Community.”  Roland Wirt died on April 13, 2020, at the age of 69.

Legends are defined by their work and how it impacts the culture.  We remember Roland Wirt so others don’t forget.
