I started in college radio at 88.1 WHOV-FM at Hampton University and played the first hip hop at the station. My career has taken me to Norfolk, VA (WOWI-FM), Afternoon Drive in Washington, DC (WPGC-FM), afternoon drive in Los Angeles, CA (KKBT-FM), Middays in New York City (WBLS-FM), Afternoon Drive/Music Director/Interim Program Director in Washington, DC (WMMJ), former host of BET’s Teen Summit and am currently the Quiet Storm Host in Philadelphia, PA at WDAS-FM.
As a little elementary school kid growing up in Washington, DC, my radio heroes were Donnie Simpson on WKYS and Frank Ski & Larry Gee on University of DC’s WDCU. There are two other radio personalities who had a huge influence on me who don’t get the credit they deserve – The Boodah Brothers (Lawrence “Kool DJ Law” Brown III and Chris “Big B” Belcher) on WOWI-FM in Norfolk, VA. Law and B had a magical chemistry. EVERYTHING about their Rap show was so vivid – the imaging, the interviews and talk breaks. It was like TV on your radio. We lost DJ Law in 2010 and I will always consider him a true legend, a friend and great human being. R.I.P DJ Law.
What I learned from all of them is that passion for the music, work ethic and authenticity will always be your most valuable currency.
