BHM 2020 – Kashon Powell

I began my career in 1992 at KBXX-FM, the Box in Houston, TX as Research Assistant and worked my way through the ranks. In 2001, I became the first female Program Director for the station. l joined Clear Channel/Philadelphia (now iHeart) in 2004 as Assistant Program Director/Music Director and was soon promoted to Program Director for WUSL-FM and WDAS-FM. I moved on to serve as iHeart’s Director of Urban Programming for Virginia, which included WOWI-FM, WKSA-FM, and WBTJ-FM. In 2015, I joined Radio One/Washington D.C. as Program Director of WMMJ-FM and two years later was promoted to Operations Manager of the cluster.

In 2019, I became the Vice President of Programming for Radio One, the first woman in the corporation to hold this position. l oversee the programming strategies for the D.C., Baltimore & Philadelphia markets, head the programming for WMMJ & syndicated programs, The Russ Parr Morning Show and Love & R&B with Al B. Sure & am the Creator and Producer of Urban One Honors.

Robert Scorpio has had a huge influence on my career. Rob was the Program Director at KBXX. I learned many valuable programming strategies from Rob that I still utilize to this day, but I would say the most valuable is understanding the importance of the relationship between sales and programming. I also admired his creativity and his ability to create compelling content from virtually anything.

Thea Mitchem has also been an influential part of my career journey. I learned many valuable lessons, including how to navigate and succeed in a male dominated industry. Thea is one of the most strategic thinkers I’ve ever known and I admire her ability to flourish in this ever-changing business.

My proudest moment to date is being Creator and Executive Producer of Urban One Honors, an annual event that celebrates the accomplishments of people who have made extraordinary contributions in entertainment, media, education and community. This was something that was created as a local event for my DC radio market, but quickly grew into something bigger than I could ever have imagined and airs on TV One.
