BHM 2020 – Angelique Perrin

In college I was a theatre major with no interest in radio outside of being a listener. The closest I got to the college radio station was hanging with a friend who had her own show. I started at 102Jamz/Greensboro. Shelly Bynum would slip scripts under my dorm door & I’d call into his morning show to play his stalker Monica. I loved it. But the real first job was at WQMG where Sam Weaver, BJ Murphy and Skip Dillard really prepared me for the business and where Aquanetta was born. She went from a sassy little feature on BJ Murphy’s morning show to syndicated, thanks to Tre Black & Tony Gray. I had my eye & heart on syndication from the very beginning. Tre Black & I were developing syndicated shows from the day we first met. We traveled from market to market as Tre Black & his little sister Aquanetta, but when we landed in Hollywood at KKBT, that was it for me. LA allowed me to act, host, do cartoons & be on the radio.  You can catch my voice in “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” as Jedi Master Adi Gallia & in the Netflix anime cartoon “CannonBusters” as the warrior Hilda. I’ve produced & hosted with Walt Baby Love & the Baka Boyz. 10 years ago, I got a call about a show for women of color by women of color & Café Mocha was born.

One personality who influenced my career is Tre Black. We met & he was an out-of-the-box thinker like I am. When I told him about my dreams, he didn’t try to reel me back in. He said, let’s go. Aquanetta was syndicated, became the voice of BET’s Comic View for years & was featured in a cartoon! Tony Gray hooked us up with June Brody & the people of Urban Fun Factory. My character Aquanetta was now available to 250 urban markets.

At Café Mocha I’ve been allowed to produce various shows but the proudest moments were interviewing the Obamas. We interviewed President Obama once. Michelle Obama was on the show twice & we won a Gracie Award for that interview. Awards are great. It acknowledges that your work has made an impact. But that’s the goal of the show overall to get people talking and thinking every weekend.
