BBM Profile: Regina R. Robertson

Once upon a time, I had dreams of being a fashion buyer. The Universe had other plans. After college, I landed at Epic Records, where I processed A&R paperwork and was later promoted to product manager. During my tenure, I worked with Shabba Ranks, Babyface, George Clinton and so many more.

When I moved from New York to Los Angeles, I segued from music to film marketing. In no time, I found myself at a crossroads, so I changed direction. I contacted a few publicists I’d worked with in the industry and started writing press materials. Then, I  found my way to magazines. In 2006, I was named west coast editor of Essence and last summer, my first book, He Never Came Home, was published. Currently, I’m planning my next literary project, chasing deadlines and writing scripts for live events.

As a former “closet writer,” my journey is everything and nothing like I’d imagined. Along the way, Erykah, Jill, Amel and frequent doses of Kendrick have kept me lifted. And Goapele’s “Closer” inspires, still.
