BBM Profile: James Lopez

I am now a Producer/Head of Motion Pictures, Will Packer Productions. I produce films with my partner Will Packer under our current deal at Universal Pictures. I’ve worked as SVP of Production Screen Gems/Sony Pictures, SVP of Marketing/Brand Partnerships Atlantic Records (T.I., Fat Joe, Trick Daddy, Trina, Fabolous, Twista, B.o.B, Gerald Levert, Estelle, Sean Paul, Little Brother…),Sr. Dir of Marketing Red Ant (Sunz of Man), Sr. Dir of Marketing Delicious Vinyl (Pharcyde, Born Jamericans, Brand New Heavies, WhoRidas), Dir. Of Marketing Wild West Records (The Nonce, Superb, The Mexikanz)
and as Dir. Of Rap Promotions Maverick Records (Me’Shell Ndegeocello, Dana Dane, UNV)

My transition to film started during my time at Atlantic Records when I became involved in soundtracks. I studied the film business from afar by reading tons of scripts, building relationships with studio executives, spending several hours on set and observing the production process. I also started to produce music videos and commercials to gain physical production experience.

I basically trained myself in script development and read several books on the film industry and closely followed deals and monitored industry trades. I had a vision and goal for what I wanted to do next after I was done with music and film was always a natural step for me. Being a film producer is like being a hybrid of a product manager and A&R. You have to have discerning taste in material, know how to manage a budget, have great relationships with talent and their representatives and work extremely hard.

There are too many songs or artists who inspired me on my journey to mention here but artists who have been the soundtrack to my life are the following: A Tribe Called Quest, Outkast, Jamiroquai, Sade, Maxwell, Deftones, Coldplay, NIN, Robert Glasper & Steely Dan.
